Honest note
Sports platform engineering roles pay at mainstream software engineering rates — there is no sports premium or discount. The domain context (real-time, high-concurrency, sports data) is valued by employers in and outside sport. A developer with experience at a sports OTT platform is competitive for roles at any high-traffic consumer product company.
What the job actually involves
- 1Building and maintaining APIs that serve live match data to web and mobile surfaces
- 2Working on scalability for match-day traffic peaks that can be 10–50x normal load
- 3Integrating third-party sports data feeds and handling their reliability and latency characteristics
- 4Building features for fan apps: personalised feeds, notifications, matchday modes
- 5Writing and maintaining data pipelines that process event data in near-real time
- 6On-call during live matches — when something breaks during a final, it needs to be fixed immediately
