UI-UX for Mechanical Engineers – An Easier Way to Get into IT Industry

Mechanical engineering, one of the top streams in engineering every Indian student wants to get into. But is it so much saturated these days?

Is the mechanical engineering field getting too much attention?

Can a mechanical engineer get into the most attractive professional industry – Information Technology?

The short answer to these questions is YES. A mechanical engineer can get into the IT field and the easiest way is UI & UX.

Yes, user interface and user experience are two such fields when coupled with engineering, a professional can enter the IT industry quickly.

If you think a career in UI-UX would be the correct thing for you then it’s a great time to enroll in the specialized UI-UX training course. Course in UI-UX will be easier for you as you have already learned some basic concepts of design. All you need to prepare yourself is for user mindset, marketing approach, and other essential things.

Picking a career in UI-UX as a mechanical engineer will not be easy

When you decide where you want to go with your career. Being decent with technological concepts, it still won’t be easy for you to choose a career in UI-UX as an engineer.

UI & UX will not be as same as any IT course or career option.

Where do I start?

The first thing you should begin with is to create a portfolio to demonstrate your true interest in UX. You can invest time and get familiar with certain essential tools, for example, fundamental coding in HTML, Adobe Suite, or Axure which is a wireframing tool.

Here is a brief step-by-step guide to become a UX designer and get into your favorite industry

With near to no experience in web and mobile design, you can start your career in the UI UX field with the following steps.

  1. Understand all the design directions

Start with understanding what exactly you are going to do. Do you want to draw illustrations? Know what kind of illustration you are going to draw. Cartoons, animations, or an app design? Once you decide on the thing, no one can do it better than you.

  1. Study the tools for work

You are fortunate if you are a fresher, you won’t need to switch from Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, you can go straight to Sketch or Figma. Find out how they are different and consider what you need to learn. A tip from Felix-ITs, if you have confidently picked the design direction you need to follow, don’t be lazy but check out LinkedIn, Monster, Glassdoor, or some other job hunt platform and see what employers are searching for, what programs you need to know.

  1. Start paying attention to design

Before becoming a UX designer, don’t ignore the structure and the content of sites and mobile applications you see often. Pay attention to the colors and fonts used, check for components. If you have decided to become a UX/UI designer, start paying attention to everything.

  1. Surround yourself with design

We always encourage our students to dive deeply into the design. So start looking at what other designers are doing in this industry. We always suggest some resources to students coming from non-creative fields, these are:

  • Behance
  • Dribbble
  • Awwwards
  1. Watch and Copy Others

There is no offense in copying others, if you are studying or practicing for your good. Many students ask our mentors when they start pursuing their UI-UX course, what can they do if they are without any experience in design. We always suggest they start stupidly copying other people’s work, the platforms that you liked. Just sit down, choose a platform and copy the entire work. If you can do it well, still you need to practice a lot and pursue courses in the design field.

  1. Find mentors

Find professionals in the field especially if you are a beginner. Finding the right mentor is essential if you don’t want to get your boat stuck near the harbor.

The professionals have very little free time, especially beginners. But, this is not the case with Felix-ITs. Our specialty courses are meant to guide freshers in the industry. Even if you have an engineers’ degree.

  1. Enroll for a course

Many people often ask if the courses are essential for a career in UI-UX and further in the IT industry. Everyone is unique, some people have more interest in digging into the new profession at home, considering YouTube videos, reading, blogs, articles, and books. Others prefer a design environment and atmosphere.

If you fall in the second category, plus you have some financial freedom and dedication for the courses, then we would suggest you go for the course.
